Our dear mother and grandmother, Margaret (Margie) Olivia Sonntag passed away on January 11, 2021 in Round Rock, Texas at the age of 98. She was born on June 27, 1922 in Astoria, New York, the third child of Paul and Minnie Oertel. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Norman O.V. Sonntag. She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie L Palmer and Norma J Kreig and by her grandsons, Timothy O. Palmer and Matthew K. Palmer.
Margaret spent her early years in Astoria NY where her life was filled with a large extended family and friends. She was a “Tomboy” and one of her favorite things was to swing by her knees from a trapeze her brothers built. She graduated from Bryant High School and went on to work at a chemical company in NYC where she became office manager and met her eventual husband Norman. During WWII, she joined the Red Cross & worked many evenings after work as a nurse’s aide at Bellevue hospital. This nursing work helped her in later years when she cared for her elderly mother and eventually, Norman.
She married Norman in 1947 and through the years they lived in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and finally moved to Dallas, Texas. Throughout these years she was active in her churches, and an active participant in sports – tennis, bowling and golf. She never stopped being a “Tomboy”.
One of the highlights of her later life was a trip to Korea, when Norman was hired to work as a consultant for the Korean government. She spent the days traveling all around Seoul often by herself and seeing all the sights.
Margie led a life full of joy, love and caring for others. She had a great sense of humor and was dearly loved by her friends and family. She will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to your favorite Dog Rescue Group (her lab-mix, Baily was her best buddy for the last years of her life) or to DeSoto Presbyterian Church.
