Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all, Marian was at home surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully March 12, 2018, to join the loved ones who passed before her.
Marian was born February 8, 1924, in Dallas, TX, to George Arnold Nicoud Sr. and Marian Macaulay Nicoud. She was soon joined by brothers George Arnold Nicoud Jr. and Robert Macaulay Nicoud. Marian graduated from North Dallas High School and Southern Methodist University, where she was known as “Niki.”
She met her sweetheart, Charles Borromeo Lohr, Jr., in Dallas, and they married June 5, 1948, in Holy Trinity Church, Dallas. Her organizational skills were legendary. She provided the bedrock of a loving home where she and Charlie raised eight children.
Marian was an excellent homemaker and cook who fed her family and friends with her latest recipes and tempted them with her delicious fudge and brownies. She was a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother. She inspired her children to become involved in sports, cheerleading, delivering newspapers, Junior Players Guild, and more. She loved to plan family vacations in Texas, the Gulf Coast and Colorado mountains.
She had a keen mind and was often a formidable opponent when she played others in bridge, bowling or Boggle. She was always up for the next adventure, corralling her large family for road trips to the newest mall opening. For more than a decade she provided lemonade and smiles for the Fourth of July neighborhood parade. She attended the Texas Centennial at Fair Park in 1936 and enjoyed collecting souvenirs of the event. She and Charlie enjoyed square dancing, and when they retired, they traveled to Europe and throughout the U.S.
For several years, she worked in marketing at Southwest Research in Dallas, coordinating pre-launch product testing. Her father was a banker, and she developed an interest in the stock market, becoming a whiz at investing in consumer products such as Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper, among many others.
A volunteer and member of St. Monica Catholic Church since the parish was founded, Marian was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America.
She is survived by her husband, Charles B. Lohr Jr. and their children and spouses, Marian Jeannette and James Kopko, Charles Borromeo “Buddy” Lohr III and Cheryl Brown Lohr, Donald Patrick Lohr, Elizabeth Diane “Lissy” and Mark Nancarrow, George Robert Lohr, Suzanne Irene Chance, John Louis and Sally Lohr, and Joanne Louise and Barney McCoy. They welcomed twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Charles “Charlie” and Kelly Lohr, George Lohr, Michael “Mike” Kopko, Jason Nancarrow, Sam Nancarrow, James Chance (passed away 2009), Will Chance, John Chance, Emily McCoy and Dan Glover, Marian McCoy, Niki Lohr, and Amy Lohr. They celebrated four great-grandchildren, Everly Lohr, Charles “Cash” Lohr, Weston Glover, and Louisa Glover. Marian is also survived by her brother Robert Macaulay Nicoud and his wife Carol O’Brien Nicoud, and their children and grandchildren, and her late brother George’s wife, Gloria Chamness Nicoud, and their children and grandson.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 18, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the chapel at Calvary Hill Funeral Home, Dallas, with a Rosary at 6:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 19, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Saint Monica Catholic Church, Dallas. Following a reception at the church, internment will be at Calvary Hill Cemetery, Dallas.
The family is grateful to Marian’s caregivers and to Faith Presbyterian Hospice for their gentle care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marian’s name to St. Monica Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.
