

Margie was born on June 28th, 1923 in Dunbar, Nebraska where she and her two siblings, Doris and Robert, grew up on the family farm and enjoyed many evenings playing together in the family band; Margie played the piano, violin and drums. She completed her high school education in 1940 at Dunbar High School and enrolled in Peru State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska.
Margie met Orthello V. (Buzz) Byers on a blind date at college in 1942. They spent every day together until he was called up for service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. They became engaged when he returned on leave in 1944 and were married on November 4, 1945 in Dunbar, Nebraska. For the next several years, Buzz and Margie were stationed at various US Air Force bases throughout the country before settling in Houston in 1956. Margie was a wonderful homemaker and mother to their three children. She later joined the work force as an executive secretary with various firms before retiring from the Houston Independent School District.
Margie and Buzz enjoyed travelling to visit their children who lived in various places including Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Alaska, California, Colorado, England, Turkey, and Oregon. In addition to loving her family, her passions included making new friends wherever she went, baking cookies, writing poems, visiting shut-ins, taking photos and scrapbooking; and smiling… always smiling. Also, they were active at St. John’s United Presbyterian Church delivering flowers, cookies and cakes to residents of nursing homes; volunteering in other church functions; and performing their Ma and Pa comedy routine. In 2007 they moved to Oregon where they were lovingly cared for by their family.
Margie will be remembered for her beautiful smile, warm hospitality, love of family and friends, kind and generous spirit, and faithful devotion to Christ. She is preceded in death by Buzz, her devoted husband of 72 years. She is survived by her three children, Steven Allen Byers (wife Cheryl) of Pace, Florida; Jane Michele Whittlesey of Dallas, Texas; and Deanna Ellen Hilton (husband Tom) of Bend, Oregon; grandchildren Ryan Byers (wife Alicia), Marisa Winking (husband Jeff), Kristin Madison (husband Greg) , Nick Whittlesey and Zach Whittlesey; and 9 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, July 30th, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, 1835 Young St., Dallas, TX 75201 followed by interment at 2:00 pm at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211.
