Martha Fay Nelson Martin died in her Lake Highlands home Sunday, May 5. She was born Feb. 14, 1928 to E.F. and Louise Nelson in Garland. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m., Friday May 10.at Restland. She attended schools in Garland and graduated from Garland High School in 1946 where she was a cheerleader, drum major and a class favorite her senior year. She attended the University of Texas in Austin, making her a lifelong UT fan. She later worked at Kraft Foods in Garland. Martha married Robert E. Martin on Oct. 17, 1969 in Los Angeles, Calif. They lived later in Grand Island, Neb., where Robert was president of Delicious Foods and served on the board of Labatt's Foods of Canada. Martha was active in a book club and mentored young women. The Martins moved back to Texas after Robert's retirement. He died in 2009. Survivors include Martha's brother, Paul Jack Nelson and his wife, Joann; granddaughter, Ananda Elizabeth Martin; nephews, Paul Richard Nelson and Robert G. Nelson; great-nephews, Michael Nelson and Jonathan Nelson; great-niece, Holly Nelson Stewart and great-grandson Quentin Oliver Raymond and great-granddaughter, Beatrix Raymond. At Martha’s request and because she loved all things about horses, she will be taken to her final resting place in a white carriage hearse drawn by two black horses with five jazz musicians, family and friends following in a New Orleans-style walk to the graveside. Tim Wright of Plano will eulogize at the ceremony in The Woodlands section of Restland Memorial Park. Martha's many friends and associates were impressed with her beautiful handwriting and her taste in making a comfortable, attractive home.
