Mary P. Bernstein passed away on October 6, 2024. Born in Asheville, NC on December 6, 1935, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betsy Kemps; brother, Jan Kemps of New Iberia, LA; and husband of almost 50 years, Bernard Bernstein of Dallas, TX. She is survived by her brother, Robert R. Kemps and niece, Rebecca Johnson, both of The Woodlands, TX; as well as stepson, Rob Bernstein of Dallas, TX.

An opera singer whose professional name was Maria Powell, described by the New York Times as “striking, slim, with a lyric soprano that had a fine gleam to it… an accurate voice, capable of considerable power and agility… obvious training and intelligence.” She studied and toured in both the United States as well as in Europe performing joint concerts with Eugene Conley of the Metropolitan Opera. Their successful concert at Lincoln Center in New York led to future engagements at Carnegie Recital Hall. Those lucky enough to see and to hear Miss Powell perform were treated to a memorable experience.

Gravesite services will be at 11am on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225.
