

Mary Ruth Jones died on September 20, 2010 in Bedford, TX. A funeral service will be held graveside on Friday, September 24, at 11:00AM. A visitation for friends and family will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest, Dallas on Thursday, September 23rd from 5 to 7 PM. She was born May 20, 1923 in Grapevine, TX, the daughter of David Eckley and Mary Ruth (Dougherty) Box. She attended Grapevine Schools and was the editor of the Mustang in 1940. Mary Ruth graduated cum laude from Baylor in 1944. At Baylor she was president of Alpha Chi and Kappa Delta Pi. Mary Ruth taught in Arlington, Corsicana and La Vega Schools before moving to Tyler in 1949. She was active in many Tyler organizations including the First Baptist Church and later Green Acres Baptist Church. The Women's Symphony League, Woman's Forum, Quid Nunc Literary Club and Smith County Historical Society were organizations in which she was active. She taught at Moore Junior High School and Rose Garden Academy in Tyler. Since 1976, Mary Ruth spent most of her time in Grapevine. She attended the First Baptist Church. She was an honorary member of the Garden Club, a past president and lifetime member of the Grapevine Historical Society, a past president and long time member of the Bay View Club. She served on the Baylor Hospital Development Council, the Women's Advisory Council as well as the Women's Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn; three brothers, Joseph N. Box, W. Donald Box and David E. Box Jr. Survivors include her son, David Hiram Jones of Dallas; a sister, Ms. Walstein (Evelyn) Smith of Waco and several nieces and nephews.
