

Mary Lou was born on January 29, 1927, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank Peyton Kitchen, Jr. and Mary Avadna Thompson Kitchen. Mary Lou attended Tulsa Central High School and graduated from University of Tulsa with a B.A in Journalism. She completed her M.A. in Journalism at the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at Oklahoma State University, which she attended for a year. She was a writer, journalist and homemaker. She worked as a reporter for the Sapulpa Herald upon graduation from Tulsa University. During her life, she dedicated herself to her family and to her love of books which she collected. She had a love of reading and instilled this in her children and grandchildren. Several articles she wrote were published in newspapers. She was very proud of the education she received in Oklahoma schools. Her appreciation of her parents’ background of early Oklahoma settlers led her to co-author two books of family genealogy.
In 1951 she married Frank Brahaney of Midland, Texas, who died in 2007. She is survived by her son, Thomas Brahaney and his wife, Kay, of Midland, Texas, her daughter, Carolyn Brahaney of Dallas, Texas, her daughter Mary Ann Christian and her husband Mike, grandchildren, Will Christian and wife Rebecca, Lauren Christian Redfern and husband Pierce, three great-grandchildren, James and Thomas Christian and Palmer Redfern all of Richmond, Virginia, sister Carolyn Sue Kitchen Ricapito of Coldsprings, New York. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Georgia Ann Coon, and brother, Frank Peyton Kitchen, III.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 1, 2022, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas. Interment will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
