Mathilda Kaman, born on December 4, (in the year of “none of your business”), in the Bronx New York, eldest daughter of Ida and David Milstein. She died peacefully, in her sleep, on Monday, September 18th. Her beloved husband, Lenny, preceded her in death in January of 2008.
Mathilda left New York to come to the great state of Texas in 1951, although you could never tell as she proudly spoke NU YAWHK, and never developed a Texas Twang. She lived a very spirited life. She was a fierce protector of her family and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She took pride in their accomplishments, and enjoyed sharing simchas with them, and her extended family, of life-long friends. Additionally, she made many new and meaningful relationships after her move to The Reserve at North Dallas.
She loved her card games and mah-jongg games with her gal pals, and she always had lots of spare change lying around which she stashed everywhere, just in case an impromptu game was organized.
She was a lifelong member of Congregation Shearith Israel and a member of numerous social and charitable organizations. Preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 60 years, Leonard Kaman, her brother-in-law Meyer Berman, her sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Mickey Feldman and her nephew Mitchell Feldman, and niece Carla Berman. She is survived by her sons, Warren Kaman, Mark (Sandy) Kaman, grandchildren, Daniel (Abby) Kaman, Adam (Michelle) Kaman, great grandchildren, Leorah, Arie, Shira, Oliver and Rikki Kaman. She is also survived by her sister Natalie Berman.
A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, September 20th, in the Chapel at Sparkman Hillcrest, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, with interment to immediately follow.
The family wishes to thank her caregivers, and, especially, Joanne Mitchell, who has been a compassionate source of comfort and joy, by her side, for almost 5 years, and VNA Hospice for the care they provided over the past weeks.
Contributions in Mathilda’s honor may be sent to Jewish Family Service, Congregation Shearith Israel, or the charity of your choice.
