

Max D. Chapman, 80, of Dallas, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2014. He was born in Hunt County, Texas on May 21, 1934 to Eldridge and Estelle Primm Chapman. Max attended Texas Tech University, where in 1961 he received a degree in Architecture. Max went on to become a well-respected member of the Architectural community.
He started working with Norman Brinker, Peter Wolf and Frank Lutkus in 1968 on a new restaurant concept called Steak & Ale. Shortly thereafter forming the partnership of Dahl, Braden, Chapman. Working with a large portfolio of clients, developing many notable buildings, some still visible in the Dallas skyline today. He was instrumental in the revitalization of the West End, and active on many boards as well as professional organizations. In 1983, he ventured to Austin and became a partner in the firm Polkinghorn, Chapman, Cline and Guy. Returning to Dallas in the late 1980’s, he later joined Methodist Hospital as their in-house Architect. Max was well known for his creative genius; producing beautiful water colors and winning multiple awards. He was a gifted cartoonist, humorist, wonderful cook, amazing husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Chapman, his daughter Elizabeth Chapman, granddaughter Petra Balsley. His daughter Catherine Chapman Smith, her husband Michael Smith, their son Max Smith, as well as sister Lynda VanderDrift, brother-in- law Robert VanderDrift and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. His brother, Robert Chapman, preceded him in death.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3811 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, TX 75219 on Monday, December 1, at 10:00 am.
