Miguel “Mike” Gómez Benavides Sr., chick- magnet, a real mama’s boy, and one bad drummer, born September 12, 1962, went home with our Heavenly Father on Saturday May 1, 2021, at the age of 58, after fighting cancer, me (Jasmine), and his hospice nurse from giving him his next dose of medication just the day before. I assure you, he did not leave this world without a fight. He was a blunt man, much too often he told the truth even when it hurt. He complained, “Everyone loves to bother me or visit me as soon as I fall asleep.” He was a real crabby patty when he was sleep deprived.
On his good days, he was larger than life and enjoyed dressing up in his black leather jacket, sleek cowboy hat, and cowboy boots. A real ladies man, he could make anyone fall in love with him with one look and his effortlessly smooth dance moves. Those who knew him well, know which look I’m talking about.
A loyal man, he would drive to Egypt, as he would say, to lend his hand. He was there for anyone who called on him, no matter the hour. He enjoyed visiting his family at their houses for birthdays, holidays,or when he was in the neighborhood. He religiously made sure all of our yards were nice and trimmed. His favorite times were grilling and having a cold beer next to the pool on a hot summer day. Up until the end, he still didn’t want to miss his wrestling, the news, and his Rifle Man reruns. He also loved eating his families cooking, but I really hope it wasn’t salty. He would go on and on about how he could taste to much salt from a mile away.
An extraordinary coach and soccer dad, he won many championships with multiple soccer teams. He was immensely proud of Bianca, Miguel, and Rafa’s athletic abilities. He raved about the time the ref said, “Tell the twins to stop scoring and give the other team a chance.” A hard worker, he juggled coaching two teams at one time.
Miguel loved listening to music, cruising through the neighborhood, at an uncomfortably slow speed. We all knew he was pulling up in his truck because of the obnoxiously loud Santana playing in the distance. A true musician at heart, his love for music resonated throughout his life. He was proud and often spoke of all the musicians in his family, his brothers Richard, Claude, Martin, his dad, cousin Joe, and his son Josh, to name a few. He wanted to share his talent of playing drums and bass to anyone who would listen.
He always told me, “The best things in life are free,” at the time I thought he was talking about the food, but I know now he meant love and faith in God, family, and friends.
Miguel is survived by his siblings Richard Benavides jr, Margarite Davis, Raphael Benavides, Amy Trager, Martin Caudillo, and their spouses. He was a loving father to Bianca Míreles, Elisa Salazar, Miguel Benavides Jr., Raphael Benavides Sr., Jasmine Cadena, and their spouses. An adored Gpa to eleven grandchildren. A devoted nephew, to his second mom, Tia Ester, a loyal tio, an amazing cousin, and lifelong friend to many.
He is preceded in death by his loving Mother, Gloria Gomez Caudillo, father, Richard Benavides Sr. As well as, many other relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.
We love you more than the moon and all the stars in the sky. Until we see you in heaven, give Lita, grandpa, and everyone else a big hug for us.
