Mildred Payne McKnight

November 20, 1928April 3, 2017

Mildred Katherine Virginia Payne McKnight was born November 20, 1928 and passed away on April 3, 2017 after a brief illness. She is survived by her children Sawnie R. Aldredge and Amy Payne Aldredge, her step-children John McKnight and Adair McKnight and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband Sawnie R. Aldredge, Jr., and her husband of forty years, Joseph W. McKnight. A native Texan, she was born in San Antonio and graduated from The Hockaday School and Wellesley College. She was a long time member of the Dallas Shakespeare Club, the Junior League of Dallas and the Church of the Holy Cross. Although she majored in English and was an avid reader, her true love was music and she enjoyed her many years singing in the choir at Holy Cross. Together, Joe and Mimi enjoyed going to the opera, their many summers spent in Oxford, England and time spent with family. Mimi was a dear friend to many and her life was surrounded by books, music, and her beloved cats. Services will be held on Saturday April 8, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross, 4052 Herschel, Dallas, Texas 75219. A reception will follow at the church.

On behalf of the Wellesley Class of 1949, may I offer condolences to the children, step-children, and grandchildren of our dear classmate Mimi. Her life was a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her. You are the custodians of her memory and heritage.

I met Mimi in the spring of 1986 upon joining the choir at the Holy Cross. Our paths didn't cross much after I moved to Incarnation about ten years later, however she remained to me one of those unforgettable people. I remember her for her cheerfulness, devotion to her faith, and almost perfect attendance in the choir. Now she's singing in The Choir Eternal.

One of the things the obituary didn't mention was that Mimi was the doyenne of splendid teas. But there are so many things we will missed about her. I'm sorry I'll be out of town this weekend so I won't be able to come to her funeral. Hers was certainly a full life worth celebrating.

Mimi had a full life of joy which she shared with all who knew her. So enjoyed our conversations. My husband and I send our condolences to her families.
