Minnie Ruth Carroll McPherson was born in Purdon, Texas (Navarro County), the third daughter to the late J.D. and Annie Zora Carroll. She was married to Walter Brown Jr., and to this union one daughter was born, Felecia Annette. Later, she met Reverend Curtis McPherson, and they were married for 42 years. There were two children born to this union, Julia LaRose and Ceasar Curtis.
Minnie was saved and baptized at an early age at Second Mission Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas, by the late Rev. A.L. Moore. She participated in the choir and BTU. Soon after a move to Dallas, the family united with the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, under the pastorage of the late Rev. A.C. Horton. Minnie was very active as a member of the choir and the Senior Mission and as a deaconess. She was a faithful Charter Member of Concord Baptist Church since 1975, under the pastorage of the late Dr. E.K. Bailey, now under the leadership of Dr. Bryan Carter. She loved her church work. She was the former president of the Ministers’ Wives’, a member of the VIP Ministry, Tuesday Morning Class, Wednesday Bible Study Group, Sunday CBS, Creative Hands, Senior Center, Senior Mission and Prayer Warriors. She received the 2014 Annie Carroll Woman of Prayer Award. She was also a member of the Women’s Ministry Advisory Board.
After 20 years of service, Minnie retired from Jas K. Wilson - Hart, Shaffer & Marx Fine Men’s Attire and Clothing Store as Top-Salesperson. Minnie was hired as the first black female salesperson. Transferring from the Wynnewood store to Northpark Mall, she was awarded “Top Sales Representative.” Affectionately known as the “Hat Lady,” she sold all of the hats and clothing attire to Coach Tom Landry, of the Dallas Cowboys Football Team and many of the Cowboy players. She has received several recognitions from the team and television network interviews from ABC and CBS.
She traveled coast to coast, (California to Florida and Canada) and abroad. Her goal was to visit all 50 states. Her most memorable trip was to the Holy Land. She was baptized by Pastor E.K. Bailey and Pastor Ross Cullins in the River Jordan, between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.
Her favorite scripture is Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.”
Her favorite songs were: “Praise is What I Do,” “I Woke up this Morning with my Mind Stayed on Jesus” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Minnie lived in an active senior living community and loved it. She worked with the neighborhood Sunshine Club and The Red Hat Group. She enjoyed helping people by visiting the sick and shut in, going to the nursing home, hospital or making calls from home. She enjoyed mailing cards for all occasions and hand-sewing many small gifts. She continued to call and pray from the Prayer Line and offered encouragement to the young minister’s wives.
Minnie went home to her Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 25, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rev. Curtis McPherson; and two sisters, Lucy Fern Wilkerson and Mary Alice Powers.
