Nancy Chamberlain Gibson passed away peacefully on March 11, 2023, at age 95. Born on June 5, 1927, in Dallas, Texas, to Eben A. and Florence Chamberlain, Nancy graduated from Highland Park High School and Texas Women’s University. After graduating, she went to work for the Dallas County Juvenile Department as a social worker. On August 27, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, L. R. (Bob) Gibson, Jr. They were married for 67 years.
Her life was dedicated to her family and friends. She loved entertaining and did it beautifully, hosting the family holidays and get-togethers with delicious meals and beautiful decorations. As a couple, they were always hosting friends for dinner, bridge and fun, lively conversations.
As a volunteer, she worked for many years at Presbyterian Hospital, Old City Park and in the various activities of her 3 children. She had a rare blood type, which she frequently volunteered to donate, helping those in urgent need. She enjoyed traveling, reading and became an avid fan of her husband’s alma mater, SMU, serving alongside him in his many alumni leadership positions. She worked with friends on many committees as a member of The Dallas Woman’s Club, The Marianne Scruggs Garden Club and The Golden Scots. She was raised in Highland Park Presbyterian Church and later became a member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church.
Bob and Nancy had three children: Linda, Lee and Robert. She was a dedicated and devoted mother, always present in their lives. The joys of her life were her nine grandchildren: Kimberly, Courtney, Christine, Caroline, Lee, Kyle, Natalie, Catherine and Sarah. As “Grandma” she will always be remembered for sleepovers, staying up past bedtime to watch old movies, her needle pointed Christmas stockings, 4th generation chocolate milkshakes on the “twirly stools” at Highland Park Pharmacy and being at birthday parties, special occasions and graduations. She also loved spending time with and hearing tales about her 11 great-grandchildren.
Nancy Gibson is survived by her 3 children, Linda Stephens (Kenny), Lee Gibson (Susan) and Robert Gibson (Kathleen); her 9 grandchildren, Kimberly Girard (Tim), Courtney Stephens, Christine Deaver (Nick), Caroline Stephens, Lee Gibson (J’Vonne), Kyle Gibson (Jacque), Natalie Simmons (Brad), Catherine Solid (Daniel) and Sarah Gibson; 6 nieces and nephews, Jim Witt, Beverly Wooten, Gary Witt, Bill Blankenship, Steve Blankenship and Morgan Lavin; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, L. R. (Bob) Gibson, Jr.; her parents, Eben and Florence Chamberlain; and her sister, Elinor Lavin.
The family will celebrate her life with a private graveside service, led by her nephew, Jim Witt.
They would also like to give thanks to her devoted friend and caregiver Janie Saucedo and The Monarch at Richardson for their faithful care over the last 6 years.
