She was born in Newark, New Jersey September 2, 1929 and was raised in Dallas. She attended Bradfield Elementary, Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. While attending Highland Park High School, she met and dated Doak Walker, who she later married in March of 1950. She was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
Norma embraced the motto “Once a Scot – Always a Scot”. She was very involved in The Golden Scots and organized and attended countless events over the years. She enjoyed seeing fellow graduates from multiple classes and stayed in touch with many. She loved attending class reunions at SMU and was proud to hold the title of Cotton Bowl Queen in 1949. She was a Rotunda Beauty while at SMU and graced the covers of Colliers and Look Magazine.
She was involved in every aspect of her children’s lives as well as her grandchildren and attended all sporting events, birthdays, Confirmations and graduations. Norma greatly valued her friends and family and enjoyed all social gatherings large and small. She cherished being surrounded by her 7 grandchildren, who fondly called her Gram. She was always the quintessential lady in the way she dressed and how she carried herself. She was never without her pearl jewelry and dressed to the nines for every dentist and doctor appointment.
Norma was pre-deceased by her parents, Gilbert E. Peterson and Cecile Peterson; sister Mavis Alexander and brother- in-law Bill; brother Gil Peterson and sister-in-law Kit Peterson. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Laurie Walker Hunt (Lyle Halback); Kris Walker Wolcott (Paul); Russ Walker (Lisa); Scott Walker (Deanna); and 7 grandchildren – Jason Wolcott, Lindsay Wolcott Brown (Tim Brown), Ryan Wolcott (Megan), Doak Walker, Zachary Walker (Lauren), Rachel Walker and Chase Walker; Great Granddaughter Ellison Brown and Nieces and Nephew - Pete Peterson, Karen Peterson & Nancy Peterson; Kim Baird Elmore, Rebecca Baird Lewis and Jenny Baird Williams
We are grateful for Norma’s long life, her sense of humor and her love of family. We have been truly blessed to have been loved by her and we will all miss her presence in our lives.
