She was born to John W. Windham and Ora Murray in Italy, Texas on November 11, 1927. She graduated from Forest Avenue High School, Dallas, Texas in 1945. Ora Mae joined the U.S. Navy where she served as a Chaplain’s Assistant from September 1948 and discharged September 1949.
Ora Mae married Oakley C. Reid, April 16, 1949 in Beverly, Massachusetts. After her discharge they moved to Dallas where they raised their four daughters: Carla Almond of Mansfield, Texas; Dee Dee Dawson and her husband Larry of De Soto, Texas; Becky Dietz of Irving, Texas; and Abbey Carlberg of Midlothian, Texas.
Ora Mae and Oakley were married 47 years before Oakley preceded Ora Mae in death on February 7, 1997. They had seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, one of which preceded her in death.
Ora Mae was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Cockrell Hill. Her career began as a PBX Operator and ended as a Bookkeeper. She previously served as the Texas AMVETS State Finance Officer, and was a life member of Bell Telephone Pioneers. But she was most proud of being crowned Ms. Mature Irving 2015.
Ora Mae leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who she loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in memory of Ora Mae Reid.
