The rural town where he was born, and spent his early years, is the oldest town in North Carolina. The family moved to Washington, DC, where he grew up with his older brother, Charles Jr., and younger brother, Francis.
After high school, he went to work for the government, where he met Gwen Laird and they were together for the next 75 years. After they were married, Oscar volunteered to serve in the Air Force in World War II. After the war, he earned a Master in Business with Distinction at Harvard, while supporting a wife, two children and his mother-in-law. He enjoyed sports, reading, crossword puzzles and working in the yard. In his later years, he found great joy in his church and the friends he found there.
Oscar is predeceased by his wife Gwen; son, Christopher Laird Hardison and daughter, Leah Denise Conner.
