Owen R Harris, beloved husband, father, brother and uncle passed away on November 1, 2015 after a long hard fought struggle with cancer. Owen worked for the last 16 years at the Target on Coit at Campbell and is remembered as the tall guy with the big smile and the sharp wit. Owen loved people and enjoyed the antique business he and his wife Marilyn of 37 years shared at High Street Antique mall. He enjoyed working at both jobs and loved meeting new people and spending time talking with friends about sports, politics and the stock market. But his favorite topic was his two sons Aaron and Nathan of whom he was very proud. He made friends everywhere he went including his newest friends the nurses who cared for him.
Owen was born in Brooklyn New York to Mac & Gertrude (nee Stein) Harris on December 11, 1936. He was very proud of his Native Brooklyn, his Brooklyn accent and of course the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was quick to tell stories of growing up in Brooklyn with his two younger brothers Arnold (deceased) and his baby brother Dr Melvyn Harris of California. Owen’s family was part of the largest family in New York , the Zachary Moses Family Circle and he loved to tell stories of holidays at the family synagogue and events with hundreds of extended family members in attendance. Some of Owen’s fondest childhood memories were summers spent on the family farm in the Catskill Mountains.
At age 22, after studying business at Brooklyn College, Owen left Brooklyn and began a diverse and colorful professional life. A myriad of careers, Owen sold stocks, investments, insurance, copy machines, pet products, target merchandise, and antiques. At one time he owned and managed hotel chains on the east coast, co owned and managed a pet business and then later an antique business with his wife Marilyn.
Owen was an active member of Temple Emanuel and the Jewish Community Center. At Temple Emanuel, Owen enjoyed membership in the brotherhood and once served as vice president.
Owen’s talent for conversation and speaking was a unique and beloved trait. He openly spoke of how much he loved his family and how proud he was of his sons. His voice was a music that was woven in to the lives of his family.
Owen is survived by his wife Marilyn Yaffe Harris, sons Aaron and Nathan, brother Drs Melvyn and Toni Harris, sister in law Carilynne Yaffe Gay, niece Leah Gay Roustan and grand niece Lillian Roustan, nephew Harrison Gay, as well as numerous cousins.
