Penelope Marlin Hanmer's life was characterized by devotion to God, family, and those around her and by service to the United Methodist Church. She was born April 7, 1942 and grew up with her brother, Steven, in Port Isabel, Texas, where she was an honor student in high school. Her father was a Methodist minister and her mother was a school teacher.
A 1964 graduate of Texas Christian University, Penelope went on to teach elementary school in San Antonio, Texas. There she met her future husband Don Hanmer, who was serving in the US Army. Three months later they were married. Later, Penelope taught school for three years in Arlington, Massachusetts.
Her life was blessed with many long and cherished friendships. It was not surprising that her death bed was surrounded by a large number of members from her church choir and Sunday School class. Her friends held hands and sang her into heaven. Penelope collected friends because she knew how to be one. Ever gracious, she warmly welcomed everyone into her home. She hosted big and small groups of Class Etcerans, small church study groups, church-related book clubs, birthday celebrations with friends, and countless other dinners.
Both Penelope and Don were active in serving their congregation and its ministries. At church she participated in United Methodist Women, and faithfully sang in the church choir for many years. The Hammers worked well together: Penelope ran their family home, graciously entertaining and decorating for every occasion, while Don provided rich conversation. Penelope laughed often, and being in their home brought joy to all.
Penelope Hanmer was a devout Christian, mother, wife, and friend who will be sorely missed. She is survived by her sons, Andrew, Travis and his wife Dana.
Her funeral services will be Saturday, January 27 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, Dallas, at the corner of Ross and Harwood. Valet parking will be available.
