The youngest of four children born to August and Phyllis Grego, Robert was born on July 17, 1965, and grew up in Mesquite, Texas. Robert married once, to Karon (Sparks), and this marriage produced his lone child, Bo. Robert was a passionate and fiercely loyal person and these characteristics were evident in his life’s two constants: his love of sports and the importance he placed on family.
From an early age, he displayed tremendous talent as a soccer player and the sport quickly became a passion and focal point for his life. It provided him with an identity, some of his most valued accomplishments, and is where he built many of his most important friendships. Later in life, Robert discovered how much he enjoyed playing golf and would always describe it as, “The most frustrating and annoying sport I have ever played but I love every minute of it.” For many years it was a chance for the Grego men: AJ, Rick, Robert and Bo (even Tony a few times), to spend time together and bond.
Despite his passion and love for sports, Robert considered family to be his highest priority and this is where he truly excelled as a person. Robert was a tremendous father and it was clear to anyone he met just how much he loved his son and how proud he was to be his Dad. At the end of his life, Robert had the chance to become a grandfather and in this role he again excelled. He went from being unsure of what he wanted Madison to call him as her grandfather, to proudly being her “Gramps.”
Robert is preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Rick Grego.
