Growing up, my Huela’s doors were always open to us on Sundays at 3:00 pm. More often than not, she would call my mom around 1:00 asking where we were because the food was already ready. We would gather in her warm kitchen, filling our mix matched plates with a little bit of everything she had made. She always outdid herself. There was always fresh salsa, rice and beans, tortillas wrapped in a towel, and a pitcher of jamaica juice. She would encourage my siblings and me to get seconds or even thirds…we always did. After we ate, we would linger around the table, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Those Sunday dinners meant the world to me. They were home. They were Huela. Sundays are for gathering around Huela and Huelo, and Sunday august 9th, we gathered around Huela one last time to say our goodbyes. And when we gather again this Sunday, I know she would want it to be just as she always did, around a table with full plates,  and all of us together.

I didn’t spend a lot of time with your mom but in the time that I did, I could see how much she loved her family.  I knew how loved she was by the great stories that I’ve heard over the years. May her memory be eternal ❤️
