Rose Kaplan Wall- beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who started a deli that became a three-generation business and whose greatest joy came from making others happy - passed away Wednesday. She was 97. Known as "Bubbie" and "Nanny Rose" to her offspring, Rose enjoyed a long, happy life. She had many favorite phrases, and she lived by those words, such as "Use it or lose it" (she exercised regularly into her 90s) and "If you have your health, you've got wealth." In fact, upon learning of her death, several of her great-grandchildren remembered her by sharing their favorite lines. Born in Chicago on April 1, 1915, Rose moved to Dallas as a child. She married Milton Wall in 1935 and they enjoyed 63 years together. While Milton served the Army in World War II, Rose made baby clothes and sold them to Neiman Marcus. She then went to work for Darver's Baby Shop for 16 years, until the building was condemned and she was out of work. On her way home, she stopped by Lakewood Delicatessen and noticed it was for sale. She soon bought it, and the next phase of her life began. Relaunched as "Wall's Deli," the business thrived. She moved first to a location on Gaston Ave., then to the intersection of Preston and Royal at a time when Preston Road went one lane in each direction. The area grew quickly, and the deli expanded to include catering. Small in stature, but large in spirit, Rose worked the dining room like a pro, passing coffee and kibitzing with customers. Being with people was her greatest joy. Even later in life, after Milton died in 1998 and she lived in various nursing homes, Rose could be seen serving ,coffee. Once Rose's son, Ronnie, bought the business, she and Milton began traveling the world. She also belonged to, and was honored by, many Jewish organizations throughout her life. Rose was preceded in death by Milton; daughter and son-in-law Shirley and Eddie Siegel; and granddaughter Renette Siegel Sandler. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Ronnie and Marlene Wall; grandchildren Kyle Wall, Lori and Jaime Aron, Tina and Don Schnair, Mark and Susan Siegel, Bruce Siegel, and Steffani Siegel Traxler; great-grandchildren Kellen Wall, Chandler Wall, Raquel Baron, Zac Aron, Sophie Baron, Jake Aron and Josh Aron; Robyn Siegel, Brad Siegel, Blake Siegel, Joshua Sandler, Jordan Traxler, Sarah Traxler, and Megan Traxler. She also is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Jay and Rosalie Lebcowitz and close friends Lillian Henager, Roslyn Bender and Wendy Williams. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sparkman-Hillcrest funeral home, with Rabbi David Stem of Temple Emanu-EI officiating. Donations can be made to the March of Dimes, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and American Heart Association, or to the charity of your choice.
