Our Mom and Gram passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023 at the incredible age of 94. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Louis and Mary Rosenberg on February 17, 1929, Ruth was adored by her three older siblings, Jack, Polly and Sylvia.
She’s been a force of nature her entire life. She hosted the first integrated sleepover as Y-Teens President, was a star athlete lettering in golf at the University of Arizona, spent a year as a United Nations Tour Guide and taught first grade in Rabat, French Morocco.
However, no adventure could top the one that began on December 25, 1955. On a visit to Dallas, TX, she was set up on a blind date with Dave Andres. They were engaged five days later and married on February 12, 1956. Their 50-year marriage was truly a partnership of two soul mates and best friends.
In addition to raising their four children, Ruth was a dedicated English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher to Russian Jewish emigres and college students from around the world for over 35 years. She continued to be their teacher, mentor and friend years after they left her classroom.
Ruth was passionate about art, music, travel, politics, social justice and women’s rights. She was an award-winning challah baker and learned to play the ukulele at the age of 92. And, most of all, she adored her grandchildren, Benjamin, Max (Kim Steele), Louis, Miles, Ezra, Cailey, Elise and Rebecca and they loved her even more.
Everyone was family to Ruth, including her lifelong friend Martha Brown, and her extraordinary caregivers, LaShambi Irving and Sherri Edwards. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Allan Shulkin for his care and support over the past several years.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Dave and is survived by her children, Jill Andres, Roger (Rini) Andres, Marc (Debbie) Andres, Rachel Andres (Ben Tysch), her grandchildren, her nieces and nephews and countless friends of all ages.
Ruth would want to make sure you vote blue, be inclusive of all people, stand up and speak out for what is fair and just and live every day to its fullest.
A burial service will be held on Monday, April 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, 3430 Howell Street, Dallas 75204. Following the burial, a memorial service will be held in Stern Chapel at Temple Emanu-El at 3:00 p.m. Livestream of the memorial service will be available.
Donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum www.dhhrm.org or Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas www.weareplannedparenthood.org/.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Sparkman-Hillcrest.com for the Andres family.
