Ruth Ophelia Blackshear was born in Anderson County on April 21, 1923, the third child of 12 siblings born to Freddie and Susie Mae Duncan. Ruthie, as she was lovingly called by family and friends, worked on the family farm and attended school in Palestine, TX. It was there that she met her husband, Robert B. Blackshear, Sr. The couple married on April 16, 1946. From the union, three children were born: Patsy, Robert, and Travis. Eager to follow the the American Dream, Ruthie and R.B. moved to Dallas where they started their family, purchased properties, and both worked for and retired from The LTV (Vault) Corporation. R.B. in 1981 and Ruthie in 1983. A devoted wife, mother, grandparent, and friend, Ruthie always had God in the center of her life. She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church for more than 30 years, where she served on the Usher Board and Mother's Board during her tenure. After years of service at St. John, she left to help her grandson start The Open Arms Church where she remained a faithful member and often loved to lead the congregation in her favorite hymns. Ruthie Blackshear was preceded in death by her parents, Freddie (Big Daddy) and Susie Mae (Big Mama) Duncan; her siblings R.T., Freddie, Essie Mae, Floyd, Wilma, A.Z., Bonnie, and Minnie Duncan; and her son Robert Jr. and grandchildren Amber and Travis Jr. It is with love and affection that she celebrates the continued journey her sisters Iva Lee, Hattie, and Verty; her children Patsy and Travis; her daughters in law Barbara and Rose; her grandchildren Alisha, Sonya, Barron, Charlotte, Denise, Travona, Takeisha, Christopher, and Brandon; and all of her great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and extended family and friends.
