Ruth Walker Johns was born to the proud parents of Reverend Melvin Walker and Pearline Waters in Cushing, Texas on 17 October 1935. She graduated from Booker T. Washington Technical High School in the class of 1956. From high school, worked as a nurse’s aide in several Dallas hospitals until approximately 1963 when she began working as a technician at Texas Instruments. She worked there for the next 27 years until retiring. She began her next career in the healthcare profession in which she remained until 2011 when she retired as a private home healthcare nurse. Ruth lived her life being part of the church. Among the churches she called home were Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, True Believers of Christ Community Church and finally New Mount Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Dr. Tommy L. Brown. A part of the legacy of Ruth Walker Johns and her crowning achievement will be her two sons Larry C. Williams and Draoun L. Johns. Ruth had an ability to create warmth with whomever she associated. There are so many people who have shared countless stories of how Ruth brought light into a room or life into a conversation. She had the ability to make people feel special inside. She was a sweet woman that cared, not only as a profession but genuinely from her heart for those around her. She was so full laughter and life; it was contagious. She was understanding and helped people see bright sides of situations. She made you feel as though she was your best friend. She had a laugh that had a life of its own and a high pitched voice to match. She had a small frame, standing only 5’ – 2” but displayed a level of class and elegance as though she were twice her size. She was a force to reckon with if the moment arose. She was one that was protective and did not like others to be mistreated. As with life, with the sun, comes the rain. Ruth was no different. She was human, with flaws and many mistakes to call her own. Ruth will always be remembered, even on her last days, as someone who truly loved Christ and worshipped Him as her LORD and Savior. Ruth is survived by her two sons, Larry Williams of Rowlett, Texas, and Draoun Johns of Dallas, TX. siblings, Versie M. Lark of Dallas, Texas, Charles H. Walker (Hattie) of Dallas, Lavon “Betty” Walker of Houston, and Jerome Walker (Vernell) of Dallas, Texas, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, in addition to nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She is in rest with the Lord with her father, mother, four brothers, John W. Walker, Adolphus D. Walker, Clifford G. Walker, Rufus Walker and one sister, Birdearine Newsome.
