

At age 17, his parents sent him to Palestine (Israel) with his older brother. After the war broke out, he joined the Dutch resistance Army and served as a mine sweep. His sisters and younger brother were able to escape to Switzerland. His parents perished in the Holocaust.
He immigrated to the United States in 1946 and worked at the United Nations as a translator. One of his fondest memories was being a witness to history when the vote was passed to create the state of Israel. After living in New York for a couple of years, he moved to Honduras for two years where he worked in the leather business.
In December 1957 he met Lotte (Carmella) Bing in New York City while on a trip from his new home of Dallas. They were engaged on their second date and married in June 1958. They had three children, Janice, Barbara and Ludwig. Together they built a successful business and adopted to their life in Dallas.
He traveled and lived around the world and spoke seven languages.
Chess was one of Sol’s passions. He was a near master strength player and in 1999, he published a German to English chess book translation.
He lived in a home full of books, usually reading two or three at any given time. He loved classical music, a good cigar, and a shot (or two) of vodka. His hero was Winston Churchill.
He was one of the founding members of Shaare Tefilla and served on the board of directors for Akiba Academy.
His children and grandchildren attended Akiba Academy. It was critical to both he and Carmella that their children carried a strong Jewish identity.
Sol was smart, charming, and funny. He loved and was loved by many.
He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years Carmella, brother Jacob and sisters Naomi and Shelly.
He is survived by his children Janice (Ed Mullins) Schwarz, Barbara (Marie Fida) Schwarz and Ludwig (Marjorie) Schwarz, brother Meyer Schwarz and his two grandchildren, Jonah Schwarz-Mullins and Gabby Schwarz-Mullins.
The family would like to thank his caregivers who took loving care of him and Carmella before her passing: Agnes Warutere, Mavis M. Phiri, Meaza Desta, Perpetua Gitau and Agnes Nyawira.
