Mr. Samuel Lee Mullen, Sr. known to many as “Sam” was born on Friday, October 27, 1933 in Freestone County, Texas. He was born to Phillip Mullen and Alice Wynn Mullen. Full of energy and enthusiasm, Sam grew in stature and wisdom. He accepted Christ at an early age and received his Christian training when his family joined Warren Chapel A.M.E. Church in 1952. Sam graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1950.
Following the Christian beliefs that were instilled to him by his parents, Sam continued his membership at Warren Chapel for more than 65-years. He loved his church. As a licensed plumber, he donated his skills to maintain the plumbing needs at the church as well as the church parsonage—without any charge. He was ALWAYS giving and helping his church with special projects and church members. When the church went through its renovation, he was able to get the church’s first heating and air conditioner. He served as church Trustee for many years, he loved to sing and became President of the Warrenettes when his brother—the late Rev. E.L. Mullen became a minister. He worked for Neuhoff Meat Packing Company for more than 15 years and Frymire Engineer Plumbing for 25 years where he retired. His knowledge and skills of plumbing inspired him to become self-employed as a plumber. He loved to cook during the holidays, his specialty was “Barbequing” and “Fried Catfish Friday.”
After a romantic courtship, Sam married the love of his life, Ruby Faye Johnson on June 18, 1955. To this marriage six children were born. They raised a family and lived a Christian life together for fifty-six years before Ruby was called home to be with the Lord.
Samuel Lee Mullen, Sr.’s earthly journey ended when our Lord and Savior called him home on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in Dallas, Texas. Preceded him in death was his father, mother, nine brothers and one sister. His sons—Larry, Samuel, Jr., Donald Ray and wife, Ruby welcomed him with open arms as he ascended into the Kingdom of God.
Sam leaves a legacy of wisdom, kindness and love for his family to cherish. To cherish his life he leaves his children—Michael (Salone), David (Sandra), Denise (Marcus) and daughter-in-law—Debra. To treasure his memories of growing up together are his siblings—Herman, Leon and Earlene. Remembering him as the “Greatest Paw-Paw” ever are ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. To always remember his kind and gentle spirit are a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and church members.
