Sandra Elise Schulz was born in Dallas, Texas on July 2, 1963 to Lionel and Ida Armbruster Schulz. She was educated in the DISD at Alex Sanger Elementary School, W.H. Gaston Middle School, the Arts Magnet High School at Booker T. Washington Visual Arts Department in its early days. Through the influence of her mentors Polly Diskey, Josephine Jones, Wanda Hill, Jerry Daniels, and many others on staff at Arts Magnet, she made a decision to further her knowledge in the art field and become a teacher as well so that she could become a mentor to others. She received her BA degree in Art Education and her Master of Fine Arts in painting, sculpture and drawing from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas.
Sandra began her teaching career at Harry Stone Middle School for one year when the school closed, renovated and became an elementary school. She then joined the staff at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas in 1992 and has been there ever since.
She has won numerous awards and recognition during her career, among them the Teacher of the Year at T.J. in 1996-97 and again in the 2000-2001; Pyramid Teaching Award from Brookhaven College in 2001; and the Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Dallas Rotary Club in 2002. She was Sponsor of the Art Club at T.J. as well as the Robotics Team for 16 years, during which time the teams won first place in the Dallas area and went to the state trials at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas and University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Her Art Club students through the years were active in refurbishing the "Wall" on Forest Lane, various other projects of civic beautification in the area around T.J. and also within the school itself where students designed and executed murals in the gymnasium, lunch rooms and the hallways in the various scholastic areas depicting the subjects being taught in that area.
Sandra loved her "underground home" in Sanger, Texas, and her large garden brought lots of goodies to her neighbors, friends and co-workers during the summer. She also played in a rhythm band, "It Is What It Is". She was a very active, caring, giving person whose values were above reproach and she shared her love with her family and friends, and above all her students whom she considered her "children". Her motto in life was "MAKE ART", and we know that her students past and present will carry on for her.
