Sara Margaret Moore, known to her friends as “Sally,” passed away June 28 after some months of illness. Born in Atchison, Kansas on November 11, 1930, she was the youngest child of John Wilson and Amanda Hummel Moore, sister of Jack Moore (dec.) and Mary Elizabeth Moore Kelly. Her survivors are her sister, her nephew Patrick Kelly and niece Susan Kelly Jardina, both of Dallas; nieces Kathy Kelly Kuras, of Houston and Sara Ann Kelly Michaelis of Louisville, Colorado; nephews John Moore of Sarasota, Florida and Richard Moore of Hastings, Michigan, and many devoted great nieces and nephews. A musician, life-long avid reader, wide-ranging traveller, Sally was a deeply cultivated person, and a loving and much-loved part of her family.
She practiced as a psychiatric social worker at both state and private agencies including the VA Hospital (Topeka, Kansas) and Timberlawn Hospital (Dallas). In the early 1990s, she also owned a shop, “Twice Loved Toys”. Post retirement she taught adults to read at LIFT and was a mainstay of the Book Group at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.
A graduate of Washington Elementary School and Atchison High School, she earned her B.A. at Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison and later her M.S.W. at the University of Kansas (Lawrence).
There will be a memorial gathering for Sally’s friends, colleagues and family Wednesday, July 9 from 6:30 to 8 PM at Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home, 10501 Garland Road, Dallas 75218. Interment will be in Atchison, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, Sally’s hope was that donations be made to LIFT (Literacy Instruction for Texas), 1610 South Malcolm X Boulevard, Ste. 320, Dallas, TX 75226.
