Saundra Lee “Sonnie” Ledbetter, 84, passed away Friday, March 31, at 9 p.m., surrounded by friends and family. She was predeceased by her parents, Olga and Robert Lester, sister Jo Ann Lester Poteet, and nephew Dallas Poteet. She is survived by her husband Lonnie Ledbetter, daughter Kendall Hohmann, son Trace Ledbetter, and 7 grandchildren, along with her niece Detra Poteet Branch and her son Jarred Branch. She is also missed by her dogs Little Bit and Rocky (who are still wandering the house looking for treats and pets.)
Saundra was born on October 24, 1938, at her grandmother’s home in Duncan, Oklahoma, to Olga and Robert Lester. She attended Duncan High School, where she was HS Football Queen, then attended William Woods college in Missouri (I know, we hadn’t heard of it either) and went on to get her master’s degree from Oklahoma State University (Ride ‘em Cowboys!). After graduation, Saundra began a path she would be on the rest of her life, serving others and encouraging people to achieve their dreams. Saundra began teaching Biology in Ennis, Texas, then later taught in Houston. While in Houston she met Lonnie Ledbetter, and they were married in December of 1979.
Saundra was always up for an adventure. She loved music and dancing to country, tap, and jazz music (costumes and all). She was an accomplished scuba diver and loved to travel and experience different places and cultures. While taking flying lessons, she discovered the freedom and excitement of flight (and also that pilots can’t be colorblind). Saundra attended Cliff Temple Baptist Church and later Acton Bible Church. Throughout her life, her faith and love of God flourished as she demonstrated God’s love of us by serving, loving, and caring for others. Saundra was strong in her faith and lived a life of excitement and adventure as she traveled all over the world being amazed by God’s wonderful creation.
