10/19/1937 – 09/23/2018
Charles passed at the Dallas VA Medical Center on the morning of September 23, 2018, at the age of 80, after a sudden cardiac event. He had been battling several health issues for the past few years, but as his body failed, he maintained a sharp mind, keen sense of humor and a kind spirit.
Charles was born in Lake Victor, TX on October 19, 1937, to Ralph and Vera McGuire Shelburn. He is survived by his son Billy Shelburn and daughter-in-law Misti, his daughter Denise Allen, sister Peggy Griffith, brother W.R. “Butch” Shelburn, 3 grandchildren, and his devoted dog Clyde. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Vera, sisters Shirley Talley and Margaret “Erlene” Johns.
Charles attended high school at Burnet High in Burnet, TX. After high school, he served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1960 and traveled the world as he served aboard the USS Lexington. After discharging from the Navy, Charles settled in Dallas, TX, where he found work as a truck driver. Over the course of 40 years, Charles drove for many freight lines, retiring from Yellow Freight Company in 2000.
Charles enjoyed animals and the outdoors. His favorite hobby was trail riding with his covered wagon and team of mules. He made many trail rides across the North Texas area from the mid 1980s to the early 2000s. He enjoyed good times with like-minded people and made good friends on his trail ride adventures.
He lived a good life, was a hard worker, had a kind heart and a strong desire to help others.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Dallas VA Medical Center staff and Positive Home Health nurses and aides for their compassionate care.
