Born on February 3, 1946, in Montgomery, Alabama, Spencer lived a life defined by vision, hard work, humor, generosity, and an unmistakable passion for living fully. He was the son of Sarah Box Longshore, an extraordinary woman whose strength, character, and love helped shape the man he became. She raised Spencer to be strong, independent, and determined, qualities he carried with him throughout his life.
In the 1980s, Spencer founded The Longshore Group and built it into the top publisher representative firm in the United States. His accomplishments were legendary within the industry, and he became a widely respected leader and innovator in the automotive field. A commanding and charismatic speaker, Spencer addressed large audiences from New York to Los Angeles, sharing the experience, insight, confidence, and natural presence that made him such an influential figure in his profession. What he created through The Longshore Group was not simply a successful company, but a lasting professional legacy.
Spencer shared 24 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cindy Longshore. Together, they built a vibrant life filled with travel, friendship, laughter, family, and unforgettable memories. Jumby Bay was one of their favorite places, and whenever possible, Cindy and Spencer traveled to Ashley’s art shows around the country, proudly supporting her work and sharing in those special moments together. Their life as a couple was marked by deep love, loyalty, laughter, and an enduring devotion to one another. They shared the kind of love that very few people are fortunate enough to experience.
Spencer was the father of two daughters, Ashley Longshore and Allyson Longshore. He was immensely proud of Ashley and took great joy in watching her life and career unfold.
Family was deeply important to Spencer. He dearly loved his brother, Bobby Longshore, and Bobby’s wife, Gail Longshore. The bond they shared was an important and treasured part of his life.
His first cousin, Sarah Jo Cohen, was also incredibly special to him. More like a sister than a cousin, Sarah Jo held a deeply cherished place in Spencer’s heart, and he loved her very much.
Spencer also loved Cindy’s family deeply and considered them an important part of his own. The closeness, laughter, and time they shared meant so much to him.
Outside of work, Spencer embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved to travel, to grill, and to enjoy a perfectly made martini. His favorite place, however, may have been on a fishing boat, bass fishing with a cold beer in hand.
For a spell, Spencer also enjoyed golf—until he was famously thrown out of the group for not taking the game quite seriously enough. It was the kind of story that captured his irreverent spirit perfectly. Spencer understood that life was meant to be enjoyed.
Spencer was never someone who could be easily forgotten. His grand, magnetic spirit had a way of becoming the center of any gathering—or even something as simple as a trip to the grocery store. He made people smile and laugh everywhere he went. There was an energy about him that drew people in, and his presence had a way of making ordinary moments feel bigger, warmer, and more memorable.
Perhaps most importantly, Spencer made people feel completely free to be themselves. His hospitality was legendary, matched only by his wicked sense of humor. He welcomed people in, put them at ease, and made sure there was always laughter in the room. His quick wit, infectious laugh, and remarkable ability to connect with people made him the funniest—and often the most fun—person in the room.
Spencer had a rare gift for bringing people together and turning ordinary gatherings into extraordinary memories. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable professional achievements, but for his generosity, charisma, loyalty, humor, and the joy he brought to the people around him.
His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the friendships he treasured, The Longshore Group, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, laughter, and unmistakable presence.
Spencer will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife, Cindy Longshore; his daughters, Ashley Longshore and Allyson Longshore; his brother, Bobby Longshore, and sister-in-law, Gail Longshore; his beloved cousin Sarah Jo Cohen; Cindy’s family; and the many friends, colleagues, and loved ones who had the privilege of knowing him.
Spencer lived big, loved deeply, laughed often, and left an impression wherever he went. He was truly one of a kind, and he will never be forgotten.
