Steve was born October 31, 1948 to Alvin and Lucile Cowan of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He shared that honor with his five siblings Mary, Ray, Bob, Bill, and Kay. In December, 1968 he married Teresa Bynum, also of Fort Smith. The most memorable event in their 46 years was the birth of their son James in October 1977. Steve was a thoughtful and loving father and husband. He enjoyed all the basketball, baseball, football, and soccer games over the years. (Maybe not so much the soccer). Hitting and pitching balls at the school yard with all the neighborhood kids was a favorite pastime. Steve was always there with a helping hand and a smile. We will miss his sweet smile.
Moving to Dallas in 1973, Steve worked with Frozen Food Express for 24 years, and Texas Mail for 12 years. He retired in 2012, and maintained the most manicured lawn in the neighborhood, assisting his closest neighbors with their yard work (whether they needed/wanted it or not), played golf, pool, fished and made a few trips to the casinos. Steve loved his animals. He had two spoiled rotten Chihuahuas, Sasha and Beau, a cat Gracie who adopted him, and for the past 25 years, his African Grey parrot Angel. He also loved to sit on the patio with his morning coffee and watch the birds that he fed daily.
Steve was one of the most gentle and caring individuals. He carried out his mother's legacy of sharing and helping others. If you needed something and he could help with time, money or a listening ear, he was there. He was quick witted, loved to laugh, share a joke, and definitely had the Cowan sense of humor.
Steve was a competitor at heart. He enjoyed playing in his APA pool league. He joined the league in 2000, and enjoyed each and every game. He was a great winner, pretty good loser, and a very, very good player. Steve was our social butterfly! He never met a stranger. If you did not know him when you started, you would be a friend before you left. He loved all of the many friends he made over the years.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father, Alvin and Lucile; his sisters Mary and Kay; his brothers Bill and Ray. He is survived by his wife Teresa, and his son James, both of Dallas; brother Bob and wife Laura of Mabank, TX; nephews Tom Cowan of Rogers, AR, and Jeff Cowan of Tulsa, OK; sister-in-law Vickie Cowan and nieces Ashlee and Halee of Flintstone, GA, nieces Leslie Grell of Flower Mounds, TX, Stacy Buchanan of Austin, TX, Kathy Torrey of Huntsville, AL, Cheri Douglas, and Kim Beeson of Fort Smith, AR; cousins Kenneth Cowan of Fort Smith, AR and Donald Cowan of Dallas, TX, David Cowan of Little Rock, AR and Kathryn Cowan.
A Memorial Service for remembrance of Steve will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tommy Lander officiating. The family will receive friends after the service with a reception at the funeral home.
Arrangements under the direction of Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home, Dallas, TX.
