Sue Gill Rose passed away Saturday, June 18th at the age of 98 after a life well-lived. Known for her elegance and vitality, she possessed an immense joy of life that made the world sunnier to all who knew her. Sue did Tai Chi well into her 90’s and even during her last weeks of living would say to those taking care of her, “Aren’t we lucky?”
Sue was born February 24, 1913 in San Antonio, Texas and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma on the farm her grandparents homesteaded. She moved to Dallas in the early 1930s and worked briefly as a model and a personal buyer at Neiman Marcus. She married Edward Washington Rose II, had four children, and began civic work building a better Dallas by investing in education and other important social services and institutions. Sue had a lifelong love of literature and the arts. She was a longtime member of Highland Park Methodist Church, and an integral part of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.
Despite her great poise, Sue was not above being silly, telling a sly joke, or interrupting a dinner party to howl at the full moon. She would crinkle her nose and twinkle her beautiful blue eyes when she was amused. She was a great beauty, a kind woman, and a loyal friend. She seeded joy in life much like her beloved Texas wildflowers. The world is a poorer place without her.
Sue is survived by her children Sue Gill Rose of Seattle, WA, Edward W. (Rusty) Rose of Dallas, TX, Mary Ann Rose Justman of Austin, TX; her grandchildren, Katherine (Farmer) Swiney, Elizabeth Abbott Farmer, Mary Patricia (Farmer) Hayes, John Lodge Farmer, William Edward Rose, Lela Helen Rose, Catherine (Casey) Rose Crumpacker, Cully Ann Crumpacker, Tessa Kate Justman, Lilia Rose Justman, Allison Lindsey Rose, and Delaney John Rose. She was also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son John Glanville Rose.
The family is grateful for the wonderful care provided by Sherri Moore, Letha Valentine, and Janet Renshaw.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 28, at 11:00 AM, Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.
Memorials in her name may be sent to the Sue Rose Summer Institute for Teachers at the Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture, or to Highland Park United Methodist Church.
