Sylvia Spurger Rundell, was born August 5, 1933 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas and died peacefully surrounded by family on June 18, 2020 in Dallas, Texas. We believe that in all of this sadness, stress, and grief, there is a love story to be told and understood between our mother and father. Sylvia died a week, to the day, after her beloved C.A.
Sylvia was born to Hubbard and Lona Morgan Spurger growing up in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas. She spent many summers at Lake ‘O The Pines with her extended family enjoying good old East Texas cooking. She attended high school in Mt. Pleasant, Texas and her college days were spent at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
It was at the University of Texas where she met her husband, C.A. He impressed Sylvia on the steps of the Theta house so much that their relationship blossomed in to love quickly and they were married the day before C.A. had to enter the Navy for duty. Again, the magnificent piney woods of East Texas was the theater for a beautiful wedding.
The early years of marriage for Sylvia and C.A. took them from San Diego for the Navy to Boston for Harvard Business School, eventually settling in Dallas to be near family – Sylvia always by C.A.’s side, for the sometimes tough, and more often, good times of their long journey together.
Sylvia loved to travel with her family and play board games and there are too many jokes to share, but just know tears of laughter at some of Sylvia’s shenanigans were a hoot and she got away with a lot! However, her knowledge of history was nothing short of impressive so she always won on history trivia, as she was a voracious reader of any and all non-fiction, historical novels.
Sylvia enjoyed doting on family and friends with her generosity and benevolence. She found fulfillment in volunteering her time, particularly with the Women of St. Michael’s and All Angels church, where she was president, as well as with the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, where she was also president. Many other organizations were the recipients of her time and kindness such as Les Femmes du Monde and Concours d’Elegance. Since her passing, many have shared stories of Sylvia’s altruistic nature.
A private graveside service was held June 23, 2020 at Sparkman Hillcrest in Dallas, Texas. A Celebration of Life may take place at a later date.
