Thomas Wharton Kindred, 93, of Highland Park, passed away on June 1, 2020 surrounded by his loving children. He was born in Dallas on October 22, 1926 to Wendell Howard Kindred and Lucy Clark Wharton. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1944, served in the US navy from 1945-46 and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Methodist University.
Tom was a real estate developer and general contractor for 60 years. He began his career at Minneapolis Honeywell before starting his own construction and development company, Kindred Construction, Inc., in 1959. Tom’s commitment to quality and integrity as a builder of fine homes earned him much praise from friends and neighbors. For Tom, the best part of his work was all of the friends he made throughout the years.
Tom was a lifelong member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church and was active in many other social and civic organizations including The Salesmanship Club of Dallas, Brook Hollow Golf Club, Idlewild Club, and Terpsichorean Club. In addition, he was a member of Dallas Associates and on the Board of Directors of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas/Texas Health from 1988-2008 serving as its chair from 2002-2005.
Tom had a passion for music. He played the clarinet, guitar, and piano, regaling many with his beautiful baritone voice. His other passions included, at times, amateur photography, motorcycling, arabian horses, and recreational aviation.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Amy Kindred Bonanno (John), Lucy Kindred Galbraith (Steve), and Jean Kindred Wilmerding (Chris). He was a loving and proud grandfather to Katie and Harry Galbraith and Jack and Lucy Wilmerding. He was also adored by many nieces and grand-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Tom always valued his children and this was never more represented than in his work with The Salesmanship Club of Dallas. As a 50 year Gold Badge member, Tom contributed his passion and talent to this organization for more than half its history. He always felt it important to enrich the quality of life for children and their families.
