Thynon Sykes, Sr., 102, was born on February 14, 1916, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, to the late Virginia and Milton Sykes. Thynon received his education in the Broken Bow Independent School District. He later served in the United States Navy from August 9, 1943, to November 21, 1944, when he received an honorable discharge. In the early 1950s, he worked in the home for the Neuhoffs as a cook. Later in years, at different times, he worked for Stanly, Friendly and Steakley Chevrolet as a mechanic before his retirement. He and his wife, Rozell, became foster parents for Child Protective Services for over thirty years. During this time, they cared for over two hundred children and also adopted four children Roderic, Byron, Lavitta and Brandi. He attended and was a member of Carver Heights Baptist Church.
Thynon looked forward to taking his vacations to California and Las Vegas. He loved going to Yellow Belly drag strip and fast cars, along with drawing and his lottery tickets, he also enjoyed watching wrestling. He was known for his home made barbecue sauce. “T.H.” loved to barbecue and cook for his family, while enjoying their company. He was loved and adored by many.
On Thursday, May 17, 2018, Mr. Thynon Sykes, Sr., was called from his labor to reward in glory. He was welcomed by his parents; wife, Rozell Sykes; brothers, Linnon, Thurmon, Nathaniel, James, Clinton and William; sisters, Erma, Edna, Audrey Ann, Dollie V. and Ollie V.; children, Lee, Kenneth Wayne, Lindsey, Thynon, Jr., and Linda Fay; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Sykes.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Bennie (Norma), Dorothy (William), Kenneth Paul, Vickey, Ruth, Detra, Bruce, Roderic, Byron, Lavitta and Brandi; forty-five grandchildren, eighty great-grandchildren, fifty-five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.
