Travis Wayne Slaughter passed away in his home on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the age of 72. Travis was born to Nora and John Travis Slaughter on December 16, 1945 in Houston, Texas. He grew up in Humble, Texas where he attended high school, graduating in 1964 and subsequently Stephen F. Austin State University where he met his wife of 49 years, Nancy Dees. Together, they made Dallas their permanent home and had 2 daughters.
Travis was a lifetime educator and during his time as a Biology teacher in DISD, he attended night school at North Texas State University and attained a Master’s degree in Education. He eventually went on to become an administrator for DISD, where he retired after 36 years of dedicated service to the students he so loved.
Travis will be remembered by his friends and family for his humble nature, easy smile and generous personality. Travis never met a stranger and was always willing to give of himself without need for recognition. Beginning in college, he selflessly worked with special needs individuals. Despite his busy professional career, he made time to work several other jobs so that the love of his life, Nancy, could stay at home to raise their daughters. Travis was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughters; Tracy Slaughter Pedroza (Armando) and Tricia Slaughter Vela (Steven); his 5 grandchildren Jackson, Shelby and Mia Slaughter; Grace and Claire Vela; one sister and 2 brothers; his #1 buddy, Gary Dees; along with numerous in laws, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Laurel Land Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday, September 15th at 10:00am with services at Noon. Travis passionately loved his family and that love was reciprocated. He will be truly missed.
