George McKinley Gislar, Jr. and Vera Mae Parish Gislar are now reunited, after a brief separation. George passed away on April 18, 2025 at the age of 96. Vera joined him less than 6 months later on October 7 at the age of 92. The two of them had been together for almost 73 years, most recently in Mesquite, TX.
George Gislar listed his occupation as farmer when he enlisted in the military in Montgomery, LA. While in the Army, he had additional training above his high school education and was promoted to Sergeant. He served in Degerndorf, Germany. While still on active duty, George had a leave to visit home. He was riding on a bus from Shreveport to Alexandria when he happened to notice Vera on the bus. George “missed” his stop, in order to keep talking with Vera. They kept in touch, and were married September 30, 1952.
While in the military, George realized that he had a gift for engaging with people from all walks of life. He used that for the rest of his working life, with a successful career in sales. Vera worked at times, but was mostly a devoted homemaker for George and their two sons Stanly Alan Gislar and Bruce Earl Gislar. They worked hard but also liked to have fun in life. George and Vera took vacations together and regular visits to the casinos in Shreveport. He got a red convertible sports car when he got out of the military, and later got a motorcycle. Both growing up on farms, they used the skills they had learned with many years of backyard vegetable gardening. The most important focus in George and Vera’s lives was their devotion to each other. They went through the heartache of losing their youngest son Bruce and the joys of building a life together.
They will be missed by their son Stanley Alan Gislar, their grandson Alan McKinley Gilsar, their great-grandchildren and nephews Michael and Larry Kees.
