Verlie Fay Slagle Broderick, a mighty woman of God who blessed this world for 101 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2026, in Mesquite, Texas. Born on December 17, 1924, in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, she was the cherished daughter of Charles Houston Slagle and Hattie Ann Gilmore Slagle. Verlie’s life was a beautiful testament to hard work, deep faith, and an fierce, outstanding love for her family.
Verlie's legendary work ethic started in early childhood. Born into a family of hard working tenant farmers, she began helping in the cotton fields at just two years old, sitting on the back of a cotton sack to pick up loose cotton from the ground. As a teenager, she worked hard in her parents’ café, and she later attended school at Wilmer-Hutchins. Verlie went on to dedicate more than 44 years of loyal service to Verson Allsteel Press Company as a timekeeper.
Yet, retirement did not slow her down; it simply shifted her focus toward her deepest passions: caregiving and ministry. Verlie dedicated her later years to working as a caretaker for the elderly, bringing comfort to those in need. She worked alongside her daughter helping her build a home with her loving, hard working hands.
Her faith was the anchor of her life. Verlie was a long-time, faithful member of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church. In her later years, she found great joy in attending S.O.U.L. Church, where she passionately supported their ministry to the homeless. A direct Mayflower descendant of Peter Brown, Verlie leaves behind a rich heritage of resilience, grit, and grace.
Verlie’s life is a profound testament to the heights of human devotion, resilience, and unconditional love.
Above all, Verlie cherished her family. Her love was a guiding light that made her truly outstanding to everyone who knew her.
During a time of immense hardship, she selflessly cared for her sick mother and her invalid father, anchoring her family with grace and strength. Even as heartbreak touched her—with Verlie’s oldest son battling a devastating brain tumor—Verlie faced her own ultimate test of endurance.
When her two youngest children were taken by their father without her knowledge, her world was shattered, but her resolve never wavered. For three and a half long years, driven by a mother’s relentless devotion, she searched tirelessly until she finally found them and brought them home.
Through every trial, tragedy, and separation, her spirit remained unbroken. Ultimately, the one word that truly defines Verlie’s life, her actions, and her legacy is love.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two beloved sons, Jerry Lynn Kading and Dennis Michael Broderick (“Cindy” Cynthia); and her dear siblings: Mary Lou Slagle Doty (Lee), Charles Patrick "Pat" Slagle ( Mary Lon), James Thomas "Jim" Slagle (Frances), Ollie Elizabeth Slagle Stout (Earl), “Littleon” Nolan Elmer Slagle (Ruby), twin to Olen Delmar "Bigon" Slagle (Lenneha), Martin Luther Slagle (Irene), and Arthur Lee Slagle (Gina).
