

Vernon was born in Huntington Park, Los Angles, California on September 9, 1935 to Raymond and Pricilla Porter. Vernon graduated from Seagoville High School in 1957 and continued to receive a BS in Chemistry from North Texas State University in 1958, a MS of Chemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1960, and a PHD in Solid State Technology at Pennsylvania State University in 1965.
Vernon met his wife Martha Beth, also a chemistry student, at a NTSU football scrimmage game. They married on September 13,1959. They were married for 65 years. He was a devoted husband and also a wonderful father to his son Kelvin and daughter Penny.
Vernon worked as a Research Scientist at Texas Instruments for 29 years. He had an incredible gift of curiosity and was driven to continue learning and creating, that after retirement he went back to work with graduate students at UTD’s School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics for 6 years.
He continued researching and pushing for innovation throughout his entire life. He built a flying car that was very unique and included gull wing doors and folding wings.
He was a terrific storyteller, and he could talk about almost anything. Having been a scientist and a genuine country kid, he could tell you about his extremely smart pet pig or tell you about listening to the amplified sound of metals. He was very interested in other people and continued to build new friendships throughout his life.
Vernon was also a member of the Murphy Road Baptist Church for 50 years. He enjoyed filming Christmas cantates and choir events and assisting in various activities around the church.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Pricilla Porter and a brother Steven Porter.
Vernon is survived by his wife Martha Beth, son Kelvin Porter (Hui Porter), daughter Penny Eudy (Mark Eudy) grandsons Harrison Porter and Jack Eudy and nephews/nieces and other family and friends
A visitation for Vernon will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 12:15 PM, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228. A Celebration of Life Party will occur Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vernon’s memory may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or charity of your choosing.
