Vicki Susan Vogel Smith was born in San Saba, Texas. Vicki was born to Joe and Bettye Vogel of San Saba, Texas. She spent her early childhood in Pecos before moving to Dallas, where she grew up. She attended Gaston Middle School and graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1968, where she was a proud member of the Spirits cheer squad. After high school, she studied at East Texas State University before marrying the love of her life, James “Doug” Douglas Smith, in 1969.
In 1970, she and Doug welcomed their son, Scott Dustin Smith, who remained her pride and joy throughout her life. Vicki was a devoted mother who spent Scott’s early years investing deeply in his education and language development, even learning sign language alongside him. While Doug worked two jobs to provide, she poured her time and energy into being the mother she wanted to be, a role she cherished above all others. She remained invested in his schooling throughout his life. When Maren came along, she assumed the grandmother role. She was a teacher to Maren teaching her to be a lady and became a confidant and a friend. They developed a special bond.
As Scott grew more independent, she went back to work. Vicki built a long and fulfilling career at Nortel, where she worked for more than 20 years. She was known for her dedication, versatility, and professionalism, but most of all for the many friendships she formed during her time there—relationships she deeply treasured.
Beyond her career, Vicki’s greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Doug Smith; her son, Scott Smith, and his wife, Andrea; and her beloved granddaughter, Maren Curtin, and her husband, Brandt. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bettye, and stepfather, Donald McLaughlin; her father, Joe; and stepmother, LaVerne Vogel.
Vicki will be remembered for the light she brought into every room she entered, her jovial spirit, and her unending love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives of those she touched.
