Faith, generosity, resilience: these were all hallmarks of Virginia’s life, dedicated to the service of God and family. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Born on September 4th, 1942, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to James Grumbles and Alma Elkins Grumbles, Virginia grew up mostly in Little Rock and eventually attended the University of Arkansas, graduating with a degree in Education in 1963. Soon after in 1964, She married her husband Ansel, whom she had known for years from their childhood church. Virginia worked as a teacher for a short time until she started her family, but she never stopped educating, leading many Sunday School classes over 30 years with her trademark meticulous preparation.
She and Ansel lived a life of love and family together with their children Michelle and Aaron, as they moved seventeen times around the country and briefly to the UK in connection with Ansel’s career. Perhaps no one ever made a new place into a true home faster than Virginia. In these situations, her gifts for planning and getting things done fully came to bear. It never took more than a couple days to have the boxes empty and pictures hung, so that the family could continue their lives with minimal disruption. She and Ansel would then always find a church home soon after, and Virginia would be sure to make the perfect plan for the first holiday in a new home to be special with heartfelt warmth and unmatched taste.
Virginia was also a woman of many creative talents, from sewing dresses from scratch for her granddaughters, to painting hundreds of the nature scenes she loved, to preparing exquisite meals for the dozens of friends and family she welcomed in her home over the years. Her artistic side was part of the quiet strength that enabled her to endure life’s many challenges without questioning her faith and trust in God’s plan up until her last days.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ansel Condray of Dallas, her daughter Michelle Condray Wilson and husband Jim of Dallas, her son Aaron Condray and wife Natasha of Amsterdam, NL, her grandchildren Emily Wilson Sellers (28) and husband Mac, Jack Wilson (23), Kate Wilson (15), Alexi Condray (15), and her great grandson Everett Sellers (1), all of whom will remember her fondly and cherish the privileged time they spent with her. Virginia was preceded in death by her brother Jim Grumbles.
