Birthday: May 7, 1930 – April 11, 2011
William Sanders Barnhill, Jr., “Bill” only son of the late Audrene and William Barnhill passed away peacefully April 11, 2011 in the company of his family. A native Texan, Bill called Dallas his home. He spent his formative years in Oak Cliff graduating from Sunset High School. He then joined the Navy and served his country from 1952 – 1953.
He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in and went on to spend the next 35 years with the Department of Education as a Senior Health, Education and Finance Officer.
He was known by his close friends as a devoted and faithful Catholic who supported St. Cecilia’s Church and St. Monica’s Parish his entire life. Bill was a wonderful son and is survived by his wife, Kristina Mendez Barnhill and her four daughters, Cynthia and her husband Dan and son Daniel, Jacqueline, Angelica and Analisa. Bill also leaves numerous family members throughout Texas, Utah and Georgia and his loyal canine companion of 13 years, Freckles.
A heart felt thank you for the daily friendship, frequent companionship and care of those friends and neighbors who spent over 40 years in Bill’s lives. It meant a lot to him. Ms. Lete Davis and Oscar Heiner Becker’s daily visits made Bill smile. He always said he was surrounded by good, good people like Mr. Robert McGuire and the late Charlotte McGuire, Mr.& Mrs. Bob Andres, Mr.& Mrs. Joe Patoskie, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Gartman, Mr. & Mrs. Don Myers, Mr. & Mrs. Primrose, Cathy and Frank Halivanic, Kim and Ron Park, Diane Crow and Myra Whitlock and many other dear friends who have gone before him, Al Raabe.
A special thank you to Raul Martinez and Jacqueline Bland for their compassion, dedication and service to Bill. Bill appreciated your gentleness and looked forward to the weekly sports events you shared together over the last few years, Raul. To Bill, “Jacqui was a delight”. She pampered him by reading with him, challenged each other in chess and crosswords puzzles. She prepared his favorite meals and he responded with fond affection and an empty plate.
Thank you to St. Monica’s Catholic Church for your masses and continued prayers, the wonderful members of Bill’s Bible study class, to Rosemary Redmond for continued support and to the caring team at St. Paul and Presbyterian Hospital this past week when things became difficult.
We will miss Tuesday night Goff Burgers, Kuby’s German Deli on Fridays, Country & Western nights at the VFW Hall, baseball season with the Rangers and Mavs games followed by ice cream and cookies and Sunday mass with you, Bill. Dan will miss discussing politics, the good debates and history recants. You were a well-read, gracious man. The gifts you shared made our lives fuller. Thank you for touching our lives, you opened your arms, heart and home and shared of yourself unselfishly. You didn’t complain, even when things got hard for you. You smiled, invited us to dance and sing, share a joke or two and on occasion, hoot and holler. Your dry sense of humor and perfectly timed smirks made us all laugh because they were particular only to you, Mr. Barnhill. Let us learn from you, as it was a privilege to have known you and have been part of your life, our dear, dear Bill.
