Ed was born in Blanket, Texas, a small town outside of Brownwood in West Texas. His parents were Gertrude Brewster and Homer Davis. During the depression, he and brother Paul Joy, lived for many years with their Grandparents, James and Cora Dickey, while his mother worked in Dallas. Ed joined his mother in Dallas to complete high school at Dallas Technical High School.
Shortly after graduating in 1940 he enlisted in the Navy and then the Merchant Marines. He was stationed at Staten Island through the end of the war. While serving in the Merchant Marines during his late teens and early twenties, Ed was known to hold bible studies on the ships during active duty in World War II. Even as the older child, Ed was mature beyond his years, devoted to looking after the health and welfare of his mother Gertrude Brewster and younger brother Paul Joy, often sending most of his wages home while serving during the war.
While living in Staten Island, he attended the Manhattan Church of Christ, where he met Elena Pumarada (Helen) his future wife of 68 years.
Ed and Helen married in 1947 and moved to Dallas, they raised three children, Karen, Eddie, & Lance. They were devoted and active members in the Church of Christ in Dallas. Ed served as a Deacon for many decades, first at the Pearl and Bryan Church of Christ in downtown and later at Garland Road and Highland Oakes Church of Christ. It was at Garland Road that Ed and Helen developed ties with a close-knit group of friends and their children. Some of his happiest times was at the Camp-outs they held together at state parks like Bonham Lake and Mexia, Texas. More recently, Ed and Helen rejoined many of these same close and dear friends at Saturn Road Church of Christ in Garland.
For over thirty years, Ed taught the Women’s Monday Night Bible Study at Christian Care Center in Mesquite. In 2012, Ed became a resident of the Special Care Unit at Christian Care Center. While he had to give up teaching his bible studies, he continued to be a active and cheerful spirit and often the ‘life of the party’ with his new family and loving caregivers here at Christian Care Center. We are grateful for the thoughtful and compassionate caregivers that looked after our father over the last seven years as if he were a member of their own family. Thank you!
Ed is survived by his sister-in-law, Diana Murphy, of Sherman, Connecticut. Ed is also survived by his three children: Karen Teresa Davis of Dallas, William ‘Eddie’ Davis and wife Cindy of Issaquah, Washington, and Lance Davis and wife Monique of West Sacramento, California. Ed is survived by two grandchildren, Micaela Eubanks of Dallas and Jackson Davis of Seattle, and his first cousin Gale Boren and her husband Tom. He also has three nieces and nephews, Paula Stone and husband Preston, Jordana Ciarcia, and Alex Goldstien. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Davis - his loving wife of 68 years, and younger brother Paul Joy and wife and son Patsy and Ronnie Davis.
A visitation will be held at Christian Care Center in Mesquite, TX from 12pm and the funeral service at 1pm, Wednesday, May 22rd, a brief graveside service will be held at Restland Center in Dallas. The family asks that memorial donations be made in Ed’s name to Christian Care Center.
