William Lee Phelps MD

January 24, 1934November 28, 2019

Dr. William “Bill” Lee Phelps passed away November 28, 2019. Bill was born on January 24th, 1934, in Benton, Illinois, to William Neal and Lela Virginia Phelps.

After graduating high school, Bill attended the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. There he received his bachelor degree and went on to get his medical degree at University of Illinois in Chicago. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology in St. Louis at Washington University.

It was here that he met Anita Harris who he married on November 26th, 1960. Before moving to Dallas and setting up his practice, Bill served in the Air Force and was stationed in Tripoli, Libya.

He was a well-respected physician and was able to lecture all around the world. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and friends.

Bill loved to fish and sometimes even caught fish that he could brag about. However, he mostly just enjoyed spending time with his fishing pals and talking about his family. Bill will be remembered as a humble and kind man who always thought of others first.

He leaves behind two sons, Bill and Jeff, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home on Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Saturday, December 7, at 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the American Diabetes Association.

I was 6 yrs. old when I met Dr. Phelps in 1965. My family had taken me to many doctors in the Dallas area for an eye disease. No one knew what was wrong with my eye, but he did. He began treatment and my mom followed his directions closely, even making 2 visits a day to my school to administer drops and ointments. My condition eventually healed, but I would have recurring issues throughout my lifetime. We used to tease each other that "we grew old together." Dr. Phelps was a hero to our family and friends. He will be sorely missed but not forgotten.

Such a sad lose of such a wise, kind, generous, and loving man. Our family was fortunate to have lived next to Bill and Anita while my children were very young. Bill showed them attention and love as if they were his own grandchildren. I will be eternally grateful for the positive influence he had our my children and our family. He will be truly missed. May God bless his soul and may Bill rest in peace as we all rely upon our loving memories of him moving forward.

First off, I want to express my sympathy to the family over the loss of a great man. I worked with Bill for many years as his Christmas Light Installer. Bill was always cheerful and looked forward to his home being decorated for the Christmas season. I have many clients over the last 20 years, and Bill was a special one to our crew and I. He will be deeply missed, and my thoughts and prayers will be with your family in this time of grief.
