David Seitzler, 82, passed away on February 27, 2022. He was born September 13, 1939 in Dallas, Texas to Willard and Doris Seitzler. He was raised in the Urbandale neighborhood of Dallas and graduated high school from W.W. Samuell in 1958. David was a percussionist in school, and when he spied a pretty clarinet player across the room, he vowed to make her his wife. He and Carolyn Adams remained married for 61+ years, until David’s passing.
David earned his Bachelor’s degree from East Texas Baptist University, and he began working in ministry shortly thereafter. He pastored churches in small communities of East and West Texas for several years. After leaving the ministry he remained active in churches, teaching Bible classes, serving on boards, and officiating marriages and funerals for friends and family.
David was also a high school teacher at Mertzon High School and Kaufman High School. He taught English, Drama, Speech, and he directed school plays. He once said teaching was the only job he had that he looked forward to everyday. In 1973, David began his work in the insurance business and soon after opened Seitzler Insurance Agency in Mesquite, TX. His office was the kind of place where an insured would come by to pay on his insurance policy and then stay for two hours talking with David about solving the problems of the world. David remained an insurance man until his retirement.
When he wasn’t working, David aka Dad aka Grandpa aka Poppy enjoyed traveling with Carolyn, cooking, attending family functions, watching his grandkids’ ball games and music performances, preparing Sunday School lessons, watching college sports, and feeding the many birds that visited his backyard. He loved a good joke, country music, playing pranks on the kids, and breaking into song when the lyrics fit the situation. In his final year when he was struggling to walk or eat or stand, he would sometimes surprise his nurses and physical therapists with a beautiful tenor rendition about walking, or food, or something reflecting his recovery efforts. He was a prize and usually made an impression on those whose paths he crossed.
David is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Jerry Seitzler. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Seitzler; his sister Barbara Ray; his children Becky McKee (Rickie), Bill Seitzler (Lynette), and Bonnye Kath (Steve); his grandchildren Matthew McKee (Shannon), Mitchell McKee (Mary), Marshall McKee, David Kath, Jonathan Kath, Madeline Kath, Ellie Seitzler and Erin Seitzler; his great-grandchildren Miles McKee, Nolan McKee, Finley McKee, and two more arriving this year!
The family would like to thank the nurses and therapists that worked with David at Signature Point Skilled Nursing, Advanced Health and Rehab Center of Garland, and Ultimate Plus Hospice.
