Ret.DFD. Willie James Brown

Willie James Brown “Just don't call him Willie”!! Was born on July 5, 1951, in Ben Wheeler, Texas, to parentage of Willie Roy Brown and Maggie Florence Brown. James attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School in east Dallas. In 1962, the family moved to the Bishop Heights area. In Jr. High school James developed a love for music and joined the band under the direction of Willie C. Alton. He started out on the clarinet until he had to pass it on to his sister, Linda and later to the alto, soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophone at John F. Kennedy High School. He played in the jazz band and various other groups while still in high school before graduating in 1969.

James went to Prairie View A&M College and later enlisted in the Merchant Marines after high school. He worked for several years at the US Post Office. He found his true calling with the Dallas Fire Department as a fire fighter in November of 1982 bringing dedication, leadership, and heart to the job. Later he became a paramedic, fire inspector before going to the police academy to become an Arson investigator. Because of his stellar service, he was promoted to Fire Captain in July 2003. During his tenure, James was involved in doing fire safety seminars at churches and in the community as well as fire inspections at various businesses. James was well respected as he rose through the ranks and retired with honor and distinction in 2010.

Loud, proud, and completely full of life, he lived at maximum volume with an unmatched zest for adventure and the spotlight. He had a lifelong love for fast sports cars—especially if they were red—and held a deep passion for aviation, famously taking to the skies as a pilot to fly two of his sons high over the Dallas skyline. Never one to shy away from the camera, he even enjoyed a fun on-screen stint with roles in Walker Texas Ranger, a Burger King commercial, and a made-for-TV movie. Above all, his heart belonged to music; he was an enthusiastic woodwind player and collector who filled every room with rhythm and melody.

Whether behind the wheel, in the cockpit, or boarding a flight, he was always ready for the next destination. A seasoned globetrotter whose adventures took him across continents to over eleven countries, he lived by the idea that the world was meant to be explored firsthand, collecting vibrant stories and unforgettable memories wherever he landed.

In 2012, he married Adelaida, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and shared adventures.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Roy Brown and Maggie Florence Brown.

He is survived by his loving wife, Adelaida; his sons, James Demonde Brown (Sheba), Bryce Brown, and Chris Brown; his grandchildren, Jada Brown, Morgan Brown, Greg Harris, Brycen Brown, Israel Brown, and Brayla Anderson; and his siblings, Linda K. Anderson, Sharon J. Huff (Kenneth), Precious Brown, Princess Brown, Patrick Brown, Roy Brown, and Disa Brown.

James leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength, which will continue through his family.
