Almerinda was born in Vilarinho, Portugal on January 16, 1955. At the age of 17, she moved to France with her brother. Several years later she moved back to Portugal and met and married the love of her life, Antero.
In search of better employment opportunities and a better life for her children, in August of 1993, Almerinda and Antero packed up their lives and their three young boys and moved to the United States. They settled in Danbury, Connecticut, and Almerinda would go on to work tirelessly in cleaning jobs during the week and cook for caterers and at restaurants on the weekend, including at O’Faia Catering and Atlantic Restaurant.
Almerinda was a doer. She didn’t sit idly by for long. Even in her downtime, she would be busy with food prep for the next holiday, baking bread, and, of course, making her much-loved rice pudding. She loved bringing her family together for Monday night dinners and will be remembered for playing such a big role in her grandchildren’s lives.
Almerinda is survived by her mother, Maria de Lourdes Martins; her husband, Antero Sousa; her sons, Victor (Paula), Jorge (Paula), and Carlos (Paula); her grandchildren, Gabriel, Michael, Lucas, Leo, Jordan, Rebecca, and Jacob; her siblings, Virgilio Martins, Agostinha Martins, and Porfirio Martins; and several nieces and nephews.
The family of Almerinda would like to thank the nurses at RVNAhealth Hospice, most especially, Jessica Silva, who showed so much care, concern, and professionalism in these difficult final days.
Visitation for Almerinda will be held Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St, Danbury, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 149 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT.
