Axel Robert Camp, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and most recently of Bethel, CT, passed peacefully on September 26, 2025, at age 88. Axel attended Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, NY, before attending Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, PA. He went on to serve his country with pride as a tank commander in the U.S. Army Armor Cavalry, patrolling the East and West German border before the construction of the Berlin Wall. His service elevated him to the rank of captain, a title he carried with great dignity throughout his life.
After his military service, Axel began a career with Sears, Roebuck & Co. as a credit manager before joining the Singer Sewing Company, where he served for 17 years in credit management and special projects. In 1974, Axel met his wife, Janet, while at Singer, and they eventually made Connecticut their home, where he continued his career with Payco American as a sales representative.
For over four decades, Axel and Janet built a life filled with travel, laughter, and countless gatherings with family and friends. Few could match Axel as a host. In addition to his warm spirit, he was an exceptional mixologist and a thoughtful wine connoisseur whose ability to make everyone feel welcome was enviable. He was also the family photographer, ensuring that every celebration, adventure, and smile was captured and cherished.
Axel’s humor, generosity, and storytelling left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Janet; his son, Terence Camp, Esq.; his beloved grandson, Dylan Camp; his extended family, including cherished in-laws, nieces, and nephews; many dear friends and neighbors; and his extended family in Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Spain. Axel was predeceased by his parents, Axel Lennart Camp and Astrid Irgens Camp.
Those who loved Axel will remember him not only for his impeccable taste and quick wit but also for the joy he found in bringing people together one glass, one laugh, one photograph at a time.
Donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in Axel's name will allow for continued support of families struggling with this disease. Be sure to raise a glass with those you love in Axel’s memory. We recommend a dry martini.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 26 Dodgingtown Rd., Bethel.
