He moved to Rutland, SD where he farmed with his family until he joined the military. He served honorably for over 17 years in the US Navy as an E6 on the USS Guadalcanal and in the Korean War. He earned many accommodations and medals during his tenure with the Navy.
Dennis was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Arlene (Calogero) Hammer, Patricia Garofalo of Danbury, Dennis (Michelle) Hammer of New Milford, Tammy (Dennis) Jackson of Trumbull and Janet (David) Simmonds of New Milford, He is also survived by a sister Anna Jean Nelson of Brookings, SD, a brother Ray Hammer of Chester, SD and a sister Shirleen (Robert) Moeller of Watertown, SD. Ten grandchildren; Robert, Michael, Dennis, Derik, Jennifer, Sean, Samantha, Lucas, Aaron and Bethany, three great grandchildren; Paige, Kayla and Sophia and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Dennis loved being with his family, playing cribbage, telling jokes and listening to music. He loved talking to people and he had a story to go with anything and anyone who would listen. He was a generous man always willing to help anyone and was a friend to everyone. The world is a little less bright with the loss of this wonderful man.
A celebration of his life will be held December 28th, 2015 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Green Funeral Home 57 Main Street, Danbury, CT.
